COURSES & EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING > YEAR THREE
YEAR THREE
SPRING 2013
Course: GEOG 360 Intro to GIS-- Professor Joseph Hannah Annotation: This is a spatial analysis report looking at bookstores and education levels in Washington State counties between 2005 and 2010, a topic I chose due to my interest in creative writing and disappointment in seeing so many Kindles instead of physical books. The purpose of this class was to introduce us to ArcMap, a GIS software program that can help analyze spatial events in a visual manner, by creating maps. We created our own questions to look at and created spatial analysis reports from our research using US Census surveys. I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would, and am interested in pursuing this topic further, perhaps even as a temporary job between my undergraduate and graduate years. The second artifact to the right is an example of the GIS map I completed documenting the population change of US Counties from 2001 to 2010. I enjoyed designing the map and finding aesthetically pleasing and clear ways of presenting the information. Factors involved deciding how to include the non-contiguous states, which representation of the US to use, intuitive color schemes, etc. The original map had a brown-pink background that did not translate to the image on the right. EARLY FALL START 2013 Course: CEE 496, study abroad in Jordan Annotation: This powerpoint consists of a quick snapshot of various activities we did and sights we saw in Jordan. The theme of our course was water engineering Jordan. We investigated water from various viewpoints including law and policy, culture, engineering, and infrastructure. The second file I include here is a short group assignment we did in response to a water treatment facility we visited in Jordan. The pictures on each page of the "Courses and Experiential Learning" tab are all pictures from Jordan. |

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Autumn 2012
Annotation: This project occurred during Summer quarter 2012 and Autumn 2012. I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia for one semester at Macquarie University and took two environmental courses for my major and two creative writing courses. I had such a great experience there and I wish I had stayed for a year instead of just a semester! It made me want to study abroad more (hopefully India in the summer) and travel independently for extended periods of time. Refer to artifact for more reflections. |
